Sydvaranger is re-opening its iron ore mine in Sør-Varanger, focusing on sustainable operations with first concentrate deliveries planned for 2027.
Sydvaranger is an iron ore company nestled in the community of Sør-Varanger in Northern Norway. The company is currently undertaking significant mine engineering technical works and operational readiness preparations to underpin a robust long-term operation. The re-opening of the mine has started, and operations will start in Q2 2026 with first delivery of concentrate in 2027. An essential step in making this possible is recruiting a skilled:
Mine Manager
This is an opportunity to be a part of one of Europe’s largest mine and the commissioning to get the mine up and running. The role will rebuild the whole mine operation (production, mine engineering, geology, planning, drill & blast) with approximately ~ 260 employees in full operation. The Mine Manager will lead open pit operations, starting with mine operation readiness, pre-stripping and progressing through to steady state production. You will also be a part of the ongoing restart project and be able to influence areas such as mine methods, procurement etc.
As Mine Manager you will oversee all aspects of the mine operation, ensuring safety, efficiency, and productivity. This role involves planning, organizing, and directing mining activities, managing staff, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. In addition, manage budgets, implement operational plans, and coordinate with various departments. In essence, a mine manager is a highly skilled and responsible leader who plays a vital role in the success of a mining operation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Planning and Management: Lead commissioning of mine infrastructure, develop operational readiness across systems, equipment and people.
- Developing and implementing mining plans: schedules, and budgets in collaboration with technical and planning teams.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensuring a safe working environment, implementing safety procedures, and adhering to all relevant regulations. Conduct risk assessments and readiness reviews.
- Production Management: Overseeing production activities, monitoring and reporting on compliance performance, and adjusting optimize output and minimize costs.
- Resource Management: Managing equipment, materials, and personnel to ensure efficient operations.
- Staff Management: Recruiting, training, and managing mining personnel in collaboration with the HR department.
- Financial Management: Preparing budgets, managing financial resources, and controlling costs.
- Stakeholder Communication: Liaising with government authorities, suppliers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement: Identifying areas for improvement, implementing new technologies, and fostering a culture of safety and innovation.
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Higher education at Master of Science level in Mining Engineering, Geology, or other technical geosciences with specialization in mineral production and/or technical resource geology. Extensive experience may compensate for part of the educational requirement.
- Experience: Significant experience in mining operations, previous roles in senior management from an engineering or production route. Open pit background is a strong prerequisite.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in mining methods, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
- Management Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Language: Fluent in English and an additional Scandinavian language.
- The position holder must reside in Sør-Varanger or nearby areas. Sydvaranger is in a new organizational phase and will be in continuous change over the next few years. The position holder must therefore expect that the position may change and be adapted to the organization's needs at any time.
